CLASSICAL VS MODERN PILATES. WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

This is a question that comes up ALL the time, and there is a bit of confusion surrounding it.

Simply put: Classical Pilates and Modern Pilates share the same core principles but have some differences in terms of approach and teaching style.

1. Founder and Origin:

- Classical Pilates: Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, it adheres closely to his original teachings and exercises.

- Modern Pilates: Evolved over time, incorporating new knowledge about exercise science and biomechanics. It often integrates contemporary fitness techniques.

2. Exercise Repertoire:

- Classical Pilates: Follows a specific set of exercises created by Joseph Pilates, typically on traditional equipment like the reformer, cadillac, and mat work.

- Modern Pilates: Expands on the original repertoire with additional exercises and variations, sometimes incorporating props like stability balls, dumbbells, and resistance bands.

3. Emphasis on Tradition:

- Classical Pilates: Preserves the traditional Pilates method, maintaining the exact sequence and alignment principles developed by Joseph Pilates.

- Modern Pilates: Allows for more flexibility and adaptation in exercise sequencing and alignment to meet individual needs and goals.

4. Teaching Style:

- Classical Pilates: Instructors are often rigorously trained in the traditional method and follow a specific teaching approach.

- Modern Pilates: Instructors may have more diverse backgrounds and may blend Pilates with other fitness modalities.A few common ones would be Pilates Instructor X Personal Trainer or Pilates Instructor X Yoga Teacher.

5. Goal:

- Classical Pilates: Focuses on building a strong foundation, emphasising the mind-body connection, and often prioritises achieving a specific form or ideal body shape.

- Modern Pilates: Emphasises functional fitness, injury prevention, and customization to suit the individual's needs, making it more accessible to a wider range of people.

6. Certification:

- Classical Pilates: Has a strict certification process, with instructors following a specific curriculum.

- Modern Pilates: Certification requirements may vary more widely, and there are numerous training programs available.

Ultimately, the choice between Classical and Modern Pilates depends on your fitness goals, preferences, and any physical considerations you may have. Both approaches provide a beneficial workout and improve core strength, flexibility, and posture but it comes down to the kind of practice you prefer. I hope this clears a few things up!
