In the world of fitness, certain terms can trigger a range of emotions, and one that has sparked controversy is the "lazy girl workout" or "lazy girl hack," especially when applied to practices like Pilates. I whole-heartedly believe these expressions might be doing more harm than good, and when used as marketing, deliver the wrong messaging.
Pilates is a methodical and demanding exercise system that is far from being a "lazy" workout. If you find it easy, or an exercise "hack", then you are doing it completely wrong. I completely get that it can be more convenient as it allows you to use minimal equipment and from the comfort of your own home, but man... we need to stop marketing it as a "lazy girl" practice.
You might think I am taking this too seriously BUT if I see any Pilates Instructors using this term to leverage their subscription platform, services, or props... expect all respect lost. I know a lot of my following consists of Pilates professionals so if this is you... then I'd suggest brushing up on your Pilates expertise and ask yourself if its "on brand", or if you are just conforming to what every basic exercise b*tch is doing.
The Problem with Labels:
Using phrases like "lazy girl workout" or "lazy girl Pilates hack" can unintentionally undermine the effort and dedication required for fitness routines. Labelling yourself as "lazy" is problematic, period. Your actions are preceded by your thoughts. Habits originate from these thoughts, and these habits, in turn, influence behaviours that shape the circumstances in your life.
Pilates and the Misconception:

Pilates is known for its focus on core strength, flexibility, and overall well-being so let's give it the recognition it deserves.
1. Core Strengthening:
Pilates core work is challenging, engaging, and mentally stimulating as it requires precise muscle control, sustained effort, and a strong mind-body connection.
2. Mind-Body Connection:
The mind-body connection involved in Pilates requires an immense amount of muscular focus and concentration. It is promoted through controlled movements, proper breathing, and heightened awareness of the body's mechanics.
3. Full-Body Workout:
Pilates engages various muscle groups, providing a comprehensive full-body workout beyond just targeting the core. Even when you are doing a 'simple' four-point-kneel donkey kickback (which focuses on glutes and hamstrings), your core muscles, shoulders, and lats should all be fatiguing.
4. Endurance Building:
The controlled, repetitive movements in Pilates build both physical and mental endurance, requiring focus and stamina throughout each session.. even the sessions that are only a 'quick 10 minute core burn'.
So to wrap up this topic (aka rant)...labelling Pilates as a "lazy girl hack" overlooks its intricacies and the holistic approach it takes toward physical fitness.
Recognise Pilates for what it truly is—an engaging, challenging, and rewarding exercise system that is a life-long practice.
