Working in the fitness space is a bloody good place to be - you are (most of the time) working with great people who have common interests and banter, and are helping clients on a daily basis improve their quality of life. It is amazing. BUT....
Speaking from my experience in the industry, the passion for helping clients achieve their fitness goals is invigorating which has ultimately meant I turned into a 'yes' man. I've found that I have said yes, yes, yes to every man, woman, and their dog because I wanted to make myself available to them to ensure they are getting their hour of fitness in. However, this has led to burnout and resentment, making something that should be motivating, quite unmotivating. So to avoid that feeling, it's crucial to establish boundaries to prevent burnout and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
Here are a few tips for those who also work as trainers - I hope it helps! If you are not making enough time or preserving enough energy for yourself, you won't be able to show up as your best self. By showing up as your best self, you will be able to offer a BETTER service for your client. It's a win-win.
1. Clear Communication is Key:
Begin by establishing transparent communication channels. Clearly communicate your working hours, availability, and preferred methods of contact to clients. By setting expectations upfront, you create a foundation for a respectful and professional relationship.
2. Define Your Schedule:
Create a well-defined schedule that includes dedicated work hours. This not only helps you organise your time effectively but also communicates to clients when you are available for sessions. Ensure you stick to this schedule as much as possible to build consistency. I still do split shifts which suck (ngl), but by pencilling in the time for my admin, lunch, and training, I have been so much happier and get through the day with more clarity as I know when I am going to do the things I need to get done.
3. Limit Extra Commitments:
While enthusiasm for your work is commendable, it's essential to limit additional commitments outside of your core responsibilities. Be cautious about taking on too many classes or extra tasks that could compromise your well-being. This can wear you out pretty quickly, and by saying yes to one thing - you're saying no to another.
4. Educate Clients:
Empower your clients by educating them about your availability and the importance of respecting your schedule. Encourage open dialogue about expectations and address any potential misunderstandings early on. This collaboration fosters a mutual understanding of boundaries. I am now more strict when it comes to no shows and cancellations, and only reschedule if it doesn't impede on anything else I have scheduled. Time is money baby!!!
5. Prioritise Self-Care:
Remember, you can't pour from an empty cup. Prioritise self-care to recharge both physically and mentally. Whether it's incorporating your own Pilates practice, engaging in other forms of exercise, or taking time for hobbies, make self-care a non-negotiable part of your routine. I spoke recently about how the gym is the last place I want to be when it has been the place I just spent 8-12 hours at. So now, when I think "ahhhh, I just can't be bothered, I will just go home" - I then say to myself "this is an appointment for you". You wouldn't miss a doctors appointment, so don't miss this appointment with yourself.
6. Delegate When Possible:
In a workplace setting, if applicable, consider delegating tasks that can be handled by others. This can alleviate some of the workload and allow you to focus on your core responsibilities as a Pilates instructor.
7. Regularly Assess and Adjust:
Boundaries are not set in stone. Regularly assess your workload, schedule, and overall well-being. If you notice signs of burnout or feel overwhelmed, be proactive in adjusting your boundaries to better align with your current needs. Your clients will understand if you need to take a day, you'll come back better for it.
So to wrap it up...
Setting boundaries as a Pilates instructor is a crucial step in maintaining a fulfilling and sustainable career. By fostering open communication, defining clear schedules, and prioritising self-care, you'll create a work environment that allows you to thrive professionally while avoiding the pitfalls of burnout. Remember, finding the right balance is a continual, dynamic process that requires self-awareness and a commitment to your well-being.
